Company L, 3rd Battalion 25th Marines was created as part of the 4th Marine Division on 1 May 1943. During WWII, its Marines conducted combat operations on the Islands of Kwajelain Atoll, Saipan and Iwo Jima. In early 1946, 3rd Battalion 25th Marines were deactivated.
In 1947, the Columbus based Marine reserve Unit then became, Company C, 7th Infantry Battalion. It was located at 240 N. Sandusky Road in Columbus. It was later re-designated as the 27th Infantry Company in 1952.
On 1 July 1962, the 25th Marine Regiment was re-activated as part of the Reserve establishment, and the Columbus Marines were once again Company L, 3rd Battalion 25th Marines. The were relocated to a new facility located at 85 N. Yearling Road in Whitehall at what is currently the Defense Supply Center Columbus. In February 2004, the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center at Rickenbacker Airport was christened as the CWO Richard L. Holycross Naval/Marine Corps Reserve Training Center.
During the years preceding the Persian Gulf War, the Company engaged in monthly training as well as annual two week training evolutions. In December 1990, Lima was activated and was mobilized to Marine Corps Base, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina in support of combat operations during the Gulf war. After several months the company returned to Columbus Ohio.
On January 4, 2005 the Company and its Battalion were mobilized, serving with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, participating in combat operations in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. The Marines of Lima Company sustained high causalities in some of the roughest fighting in Iraq. They received a total of 59 Purple Hearts, 23 of those were posthumously.
On September 30, 2005 returned to Camp LeJeune for initial demobilization processing. On Monday, October 3rd Vice President Richard Cheney addressed the Battalion and presented numerous awards to the Marines.
The Company returned to its Home Training center on October 7, to one of the largest homecomings the City of Columbus has ever seen. Approximately 50, 000 people lined the street to welcome our Marines and Sailors home.
